“I was very impressed with Steve’s knowledge of thoroughbred bloodlines.” Chuck P. Seattle, WA |
Steve’s enthusiasm is contagious!” Betty Mullen McCaffrey former owner/breeder and Oregon TBOA Board Member |
Z Thoroughbred Racing LLC was founded by Steve Zerda in 2010 to bring the opportunity for thoroughbred ownership to more racing fans in the Pacific Northwest and Arizona. Steve is formerly a successful airline executive whose interest in horse racing began back in 1978 when he calculated Beyer figures by hand for races at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar. A follower of horses of that era such as Vigors, John Henry, and Flying Paster, Steve has studied pedigree analysis and conformation to enable the acquisition of quality stock for racing. Steve owned a part of the multiple Grade 1 winning filly Turbulent Descent before she was sold to Coolmore, the international racing and breeding operation, in July of 2012. In 2010, Turbulent Descent was the winner of the Moccasin Stakes, the Hollywood Starlet (G1) , and was an Eclipse Award finalist. In 2011 Turbulent Descent won the $250,000 Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, the $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G1) in stakes record time and the $150,000 Beaumont Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. TD was the favorite to win the 2011 Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs where she finished a troubled 5th. While Steve owned her she had 7 wins in 11 starts with three Grade 1 wins and earnings of $902,640. |
